Unasur: A Masterpiece of Institutional Architecture in Quito, Ecuador

Unasur stands as a unique architectural marvel, its design inspired by the intersection of three virtual axes - North-South, East-West, and a 47-degree angle reflecting the sun's maximum declination in relation to the equator. This unique approach to design is a testament to Guayasamin's innovative thinking and his ability to blend architecture with the natural world.

The building's unique properties extend beyond its design. The architects played multiple roles, from designers to interior decorators and landscape architects. The use of on-site quarry rock, double insulated dark glass, and a deeply analyzed tectonic structure that had to satisfy standards from 12 Latin American countries, all contribute to the building's uniqueness.

Unasur is not just a design marvel but also a testament to sustainable and biophilic design. The building incorporates efficient strategies to mitigate its carbon footprint, including water collection, certified materials, low energy consumption, cross ventilation, double skin façade system, and natural light. It also boasts green interior and exterior areas, making it an eco-friendly architectural masterpiece.

The technical specifications of the design are equally impressive. The building's structure predominantly uses concrete and steel, with a solid core of reinforced concrete where two large metal trusses are anchored. This results in a strong, iconic image system and the largest armor cantilever in South America with 56 meters without support.

Unasur's design extends beyond the building itself. It includes open spaces for the community, library and recreational areas, and an integral project for the sector, including reforestation of the Catequilla and Casitagua Hills and the re-empowerment of Manuel Cordova Galarza Avenue. This socially inclusive proposal serves as a catalyst for development and tourism in the city.

The Unasur project, located next to the Mitad del Mundo monument, has been conceived as a continuous environment without barriers and open to the public. The building is set back, generating a large entrance plaza as a gesture of respect and contribution to the immediate environment. This design approach minimizes the impact of a volume with a high requirement of areas, with 75% of its program solved underground.

Unasur is a worthy proposal with a balanced combination of functionality and conceptual aspects in an iconic project with a sober aesthetic. The minimalism of the elements on the exterior highlights the volume, as well as the smoothness of its architecture.
